Software and utils for GbSat 2CI 20
It's time for a little update.
OS 2.11 from February 28th - fixes issues with Conax encrypted channels and adds extra MP3 Jukebox to the features. You can grab it from gbsat's website.
Thanks to Italian coder Fulvio "Obi_Wan" Lesca GbSat/eMTech receivers now have a very comprehensive and, more importantly a FREE settings editor. The setting editor was wholly Obi_Wan's invention, built from the scratch without any API or help from manufacturer. EMEdit will do everything one would expect from first rate settings editor plus it can import .dvb files and output your settings to a nicely formatted text file, should you wish to review them.
To download the newest version of Obi_One's EMEdit ( v.2.50 when this article was written) or any other of his utilities please go and visit SatNews.it and the hosted site eM Team -Unofficial site.
Here's snappy guide on how to use it:
First check details of your receiver. Go into the System Information -> CI and note Model ID, Hardware Version and Software version. In case of our test receiver it was D519, 1.0 and 2.05.
Open EmEdit and change values of the "Receiver data" window in "Options"
section. Once filled correctly press SAVE to save values into registry. If
you want EmEdit to remember the data simply tick the field next to "Always
use personalised data" in "Various" area of the window. Connect your
receiver to serial port of your PC with Null Modem Cable and select
corresponding port number in EmEdit.
Now click on "Serial" section and press the Read button to load up presets from
receiver. Alternatively you can go to the "Channels" section and load up
settings from a .bin file by pressing Control-O.
Rest of the options are clearly visible and self explanatory. Double
clicking
on any of the channels will allow you to edit all values or add program to
one of three favourites lists.
Satellite, Transponder and Antenna settings can be found in "More" section.
Values in "More" are locked by default to prevent accidental changes,
simply press "Modify" to edit them.
Downloading settings back to the receiver will require you to cycle power
to the box.
Obiwan has also written EmUpgrade - OS flasher with intuitive interface.
Those of you that were wondering about the PVR video file encryption might
want to know that few independent files surfaced recently to allow ultra
quick removal of the wrapper and changing .pvr to fully mpeg2 compliant
format.
I think it's perfectly understandable that some of you would like to view the
recorded files on your PC instead of receiver, or even keep a copy of some
material for future reference, just like you could store them on the
receiver. However, since in general the rules are pretty unclear and may
vary between the countries please note that you're not supposed to
distribute those mpeg2 files on any media. Hmmmmkey?

Since GbSat boxes are now supported by third party software the overall
support rating goes up 2 points and now reads 9 out of 10.
