INTRODUCTION
The typical economic model used for selling products
on the European satellite market is the one that lets Echostar or Levi’s
Jeans prove to marketing students there is a lot of money to be made by
leaving the customer no choice but to buy your stuff at the highest possible
prices.
You could say just a few years ago that "there is
nothing cheap in the satellite hobby", and it was true, particularly
with digital reception equipment. But over the years, with our piggy banks
shut tight, the rules of the market had to change slightly, and soon,
luckily for us all, the manufacturers and retailers soon realised they
have to find another way to our wallets. The way that lets your local
uncle McDonald prove that there is a lot of money to be made on low budget
items sold to the masses. The model is good, the model is right, it’s
checked and tested, but most of all - it works. But does high price mean
high quality? Or rather – does the quality of products deteriorate
and suffer as the production budget is lowered?
The
Technomate TM 5000CI is made in far-off Korea by the military radio, telephone
and advanced weaponry addons manufacturer Techmate
Corp, established 12 years ago. The new British Technomate brand is
registered to an address near London’s Walthamstow Central Station,
identical to that of Myers Satellite. |
The
exterior of 5000CI is kept simple, and it is finished in the ever fashionable,
well every 30 years or so, silver. There isn’t much to the front
fascia, except two crescent shaped channel switching push buttons positioned
diagonally around the power on key on the far left hand side. To the right
there is the expected flap covering the PCMCIA slots for conditional access
modules and a blanked insert for an optional card reader, which is missing
in this particular model. A green-on-black four digit numeric display
does its best to fill up the space in the middle. |
At the back I found two RGB and CVBS compatible SCART
sockets, an RCA output for the L/R sound and video, a set of two F connectors
with one serving as IF loop, two RF modulator connectors for older equipment
and a power-on switch. The TM 5000CI and all other Technomate receivers
have a 9 pin RS 232 female D-sub serial socket for connecting to a PC
via a null modem cable. The TM 5000DA and TM 5000DAPCI also include 4
push terminals for a traditional positioner, with the latter sporting
an extra RCA output for an external 0/12 Volt switch too. |
Low budget production is screaming throughout the
entire design, and the remote is no exception, although, it has to be
said, many 400 Euro+ receivers could learn from the ergonomics of this
particular unit. The remote control is well balanced, soft and responsive
to pushes without awkward dead spots or key choppiness often found in
“no frills” designs. An exposed IR LED guarantees a fairly
wide operational beam. |
