Opinion No. 1 |

Pros: |
Pros: cheap, built in Viaccess, lots of software
|
Cons: |
Cons: slow, buggy, bad Disecq1.2

For the first year of owning this box I was quite happy with it, true its channel change was slow but its not the slowest in the world. The box worked well with the early Mediaguard cams and the inbuilt CAM works perfectly (with official and un-official cards). There is also lots of editing software for the box, both allowing your to control it from a PC and of course sort the channels.
However this year I decided to move over to a motorised system. Oh dear. The box is awful, its implementation of Diseqc1.2 certainly does not conform to the normal rules, even the satellite order is wrong! It is possible to get the box working but it takes a huge amount of time, especially if you want to setup new satellites. If you can get a Nokia Satscan motor then everything works OK (as long as you have the newer OS's). Just do a search on the news groups about the nokia and Diseqc motors to see what problems people have had.
So as a fixed dish or multi LNB solution the box is fine, but for motorised please try elsewhere!

Pros: |
Pros: Cam-friendly, built-in Viaccess
|
Cons: |
Cons: EPGs slow and buggy, Betacrypt sound problems
|
Points: Perform : 7 Features: 5 Value/dosh: 5

Somewhat buggy, but I can live with that. Motorised diseqc very fiddly, does not pick up Betacrypt alternative language soundtracks, EPGs work only with some providers. Remote control really well designed, but very slow reaction from box. No loop-through.
Lots of shareware for channel manipulation, that's good. Nokia still seem top be investing in software upgrades which gives us hope for future. Digital co-ax sound output is brilliant.

The NOKIA 9800S is, in my honest opinion after 18 months of stress and grief and HUNDREDS of HOURS of wasted time, a piece of C-R-A-P.
The NOKIA 9800S does not support Satscan. Though my motor has NOKIA written on it.
The NOKIA 9800S software is unstable.
The NOKIA 9800S cannot remember settings.
The Nokia 9800s crashes at intervals. The excitement comes from guessing when and how often.Do you need this much excitement in your life?
My present NOKIA 9800S is a replacement for a completely unusable unit.
I bought my original NOKIA 9800S from Kj |

Pros: Good picture and sound

Cons: |
Cons: Too much problem with disec1.2 motors

Very bad receiver, continuous problem with disec 1.2 motor. If i tune astra and hot bird unable to watch some chanels. Last week unable to watch 3-sat Germen channel. Before that RTP went missing, another time BR3 went missing. Every time i have to reinstall and retune the chanells and rearrenge them according to my choice. I am so fed up that i dont look for other satellites. Brought when just arrived in the market.

I didn't have much time to check the "motorised" qualities of my system because sooner rather than later my Stab DISEqC motor stopped moving at all. It didn't move properly to start with, but it did move some initially. For all readers of this section: Nokia MM 9800S IS NOT 100% COMPATIBLE WITH Stab, and probably other, diseqc motors. The problem, as I have learned only recently, lies in the fact that s.c "outdoor satellite table" of Nokia is different to that of Stab: when the MM9800 tells the motor to move to "Sat1" which is Astra 19,2 deg. for the receiver, the motor thinks it has to move to Hotbird, which is "Sat1" for the motor. There are some logical solutions to this, but I obviously cannot share my experience on that because my motor is dead. Has Nokia MM9800S damaged my motor, or it was just a defective motor? I don't know, but the motor, like I said, at least moved initially, albeit often in wrong directions. I would not recommend to use any diseqc motor of non-Nokia make with this receiver unless the user knows exactly what he/she is doing. One possible ref point is software MSE9800 (Beta). Unlike computing people, I generally find the professional sat comunity to be very secretive, which probably hides the fact that they they are 100% geared towards "standard" installation, like "Sky" in the UK, and in reality don't know anything else. It is extremely difficult to pick up good advice, even the Internet is not very helpfull.
However, credit to Nokia customer support: they were the first to say that the Stab motor was incompatible with MM9800S, but (surprise-surprise!) didn't say, why.
