UK Communications Bill
Widely discussed and highly controversial UK Communications Bill was published yesterday, on Wednesday November 20.
The latest policies assign new super regulator - Office of Commissions (Ofcom) as media watchdog. Ofcom, created out of Oftel, Radiocommunications Agency, Radio Authority, Broadcasting Standards Commission and Independent Television Commission will have power over licensing, broadcasting and telephony. Another important addition is liberal media ownership rules allowing for the non-EU investors to own key assets in UK media. Accordingly to new regulations it would legal for any foreign company, for example News Corp. or Vivendi Universal, to buy British national broadcasters like ITV or Channel5.
