TiVO patent to threat PVR market?

Filed on the 15th of May this year was TiVo's Patent number US6233389. And what was it for ? Multimedia time warping system. A brief break down of what the patent covers is the recording of a selected television broadcast while the view is watching something else. This covers NTSC/PAL/DSS/DBS/ATSC broadcasts. Oddly it doesnt mention SECAM or any of the other types, but does state "not limited to". It then states recording of first stream to MPEG, providing a switch to split the MPEG stream. It goes on to state about storing it on a "storage device" and about outputing the MPEG to tv.

Now, this is a rather broad patent TiVo have applied for. What about PVR's ? They basically do the same thing as a TiVo and with many new ones appearing on the market it looks like TiVo might be in for a bit of a fight. The problem for everyone else is pretty straight forward, technically they are not allowed to build these things.

TiVo is reported to be threating Microsoft's WebTV rebadge, UltimateTV and perhaps even Microsofts Xbox. Time will tell if TiVo can take on the Big Boys and win.
