Canal+ boss fired.
On Tuesday, 16 April, co-founder and chairman of financially challenged Canal+, Pierre Lescure, was fired after 18 years on the board by his boss and chief executive of Vivendi Universal, Jean Marie Messier. Canal+ had experienced especially massive losses last year and Vivendi, as a parent company decided it was time to make some changes.
Stunned viewers had regular broadcasts interrupted by a tearful Lescure and his staff announcing that there would be strike action on 24 April. Messier's decision was widely criticised by members of the media, French goverment and denounced by the Union, but on Wednesday the Canal+ supervisory board voted Lescure off by a majority and accepted ex TF1 director Xavier Couture as his replacement.
